REFEREE MARKING SCHEME

Please find below the Essex County Football Association guide to marking Referees for the help and assistance of Clubs. It would be of great help to Referees if clubs could be consistent in their markings.

All Leagues and Competitions are asked to use the scheme, recommended by the Football Association, in regard to the marks given to Referees by Clubs. To arrive at the total marks out of 10 to be awarded, the County F.A. requests clubs to use the following method:

GENERAL CONTROL. A maximum of 5 Marks.

(a) Did the referee face up to difficulties or did the spectators influence him?

(b) Were his decisions given clearly?

(c) Did he make effective use of his Assistant Referees or Linesman?

(d) Was his positioning satisfactory?

APPLICATION OF LAWS. A maximum of 3 Marks.

Was the referee generally correct in his decision based on his interpretation of the laws of the game?

(N.B. Isolated controversial decisions may be ignored.)

PERSONALITY AND PERSONAL APPEARANCE. A maximum of 2 Marks.

(a) Was the referee confident and quick thinking?
(b) Did his appearance and personality inspire confidence?
